Photo Gallery Friday: Michigan’s Waterfalls of the Western Upper Peninsula

Photo Gallery Friday is a regular feature on Travel the Mitten that will help showcase photos from places where one post just isn’t enough to show off everything.

The Upper Peninsula is home to more than 200 waterfalls. These falls vary greatly in size and composition, but they all continue to draw visitors to beautiful scenery and spectacular views. Highlights of this area include Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Black River Scenic Byway, Bond Falls State Scenic Site and Agate Falls State Scenic Site. This week’s photo gallery focuses on the waterfalls of the western half of the U.P., including Gogebic, Ontonagon, Keweenaw, Baraga and Houghton counties.

The western Upper Peninsula offers some of the biggest stretches of undeveloped land in the entire state, which means these waterfalls are accessible but still at home in their natural settings. Porcupine Mountains SP is home to more than 10 major waterfalls, and Agate Falls and Bond Falls are two of the biggest waterfalls in the entire state. With spring snow melt just around the corner, the best six-month stretch for viewing these falls will soon be underway.
