Poptarko: The Pop Tart Taco You Can Enjoy at Battle Creek Bombers Baseball Games

Poptarko

Minor league baseball is no stranger to weird ballpark food offerings. Recently we profiled the 2015 season offerings of the West Michigan Whitecaps, in Grand Rapids. That article centered on the Joey Pankakes, pancakes with pork, bacon, and syrup, named after a current player. Not to be outdone, the 2015 season for the Battle Creek Bombers will feature the Poptarko, a taco filled with pop tarts.

The Poptarko has already gained national attention from ESPN, USA Today, and Good Morning America. For anyone who hasn’t see it, the Poptarko is a thing of beauty. Poptarko starts with a soft shell taco coated in maple syrup and cheese. That soft shell is then wrapped around a hard corn taco shell. Then BBQ pulled pork and a full brown sugar and cinnamon Pop Tart (broken in half) is added to the middle of the double decker taco. The release says recommended toppings are real crumbled bacon, mpale syrup, additional cheese, and crumbled up pieces of pop tart.

The Poptarko has a lot for Michigan fans to love. The maple syrup and pulled pork are both sourced from our state of Michigan. Remember that the Pop Tart is also a Michigan item, one of the top selling food items of Kellogg’s, headquartered in Battle Creek.

Kellogg’s began selling the Pop Tart in 1964, more than 50 years ago. The idea actually was created by rival Post as an idea for dog food. The first four flavors of the Pop Tart were strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple currant (now apple berry).

Some interesting trivia of the Pop Tart:

  • Pop Tarts were almost called Fruit Scone
  • Name was taken from the art scene influenced by Andy Warhol (Pop Art)
  • In 1964, Kellogg’s ran out of Pop Tarts, due to demand
  • Strawberry and Brown Sugar Cinnamon are the top selling flavors
  • 2 billion Pop Tarts are sold annually worldwide
  • For the last 32 years, Pop Tart sales have increased
  • Pop Tarts were not originally frosted until tests showed they were toaster safe

Fans have their first chance to order the Poptarko during opening day on May 26th when the Bombers host the defending champion Lakeshore Chinooks. The Bombers have been trying to introduce wacky food items each year. In 2014, the team had the L’eggo My Eggo Burger. In 2013, the featured item was a Twinkie Dog.

The Battle Creek Bombers play in the Northwoods League, a summer baseball league that mainly features college players. The Bombers play at C.O. Brown Stadium and joined the league in 2007. Prior to joining the Northwoods League, the Bombers were a Class A affiliate for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The team also played under the names Michigan Battlecats, Battle Creek Yankees, and Southwest Michigan Devil Rays.
