If you’re brave enough to get outside in the cold for some fun kid-friendly activities, the West Michigan Whitecaps may have just what you’re after. On Saturday, February 21st, the Whitecaps will host their annual pre-season Open House at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park Michigan. Held from 10am to 1pm, the event kicks off sales of the 2015/2016 season tickets and also offers many activities for families.

Check out these promotions that are being offered Saturday:

  • “Frozen” showing on the video board
  • Sled Dog rides
  • Broomball games
  • Sledding
  • Free Hot Dogs and Hot Chocolate
  • Crash, Franky, and Roxy (three team mascots) available for pictures and autographs
  • Speed pitch with baseballs and snowballs
  • Fire pits and S’mores stations

The key to the event for the Whitecaps is ticket sales to ensure a successful opening day (April 9) and 2015/2016 season. It also allows the team and staff to show off the facilities to some people who may have never been to a game before. The big promotion for fans is a buy one get one free ticket offer. Any Opening Day ticket purchased will come with a free ticket to a game held at Fifth Third Ballpark between April 10 and May 15. There are several games included in this range, including two Helen Devos Children’s Hospital Family Days (April 12, May 3). This stretch also includes May 1st, which is a giveaway game with the item being a draw string backpack.

As you can see there is a little bit of everything for your family during the three hour event. The event was a big one last year after a small fire wiped out part of the suites at the ballpark and fans wanted to get an early look at the restoration effort. The 2015/2016 season should be a big one for the Whitecaps. Last season, the team made the Playoffs and missed winning their division for both halves of the season by one game. The team had an 82-58 record and saw West Michigan’s own Wynton Bernard win the Midwest League batting title.

The Whitecaps saw strong attendance for the 2014/2015 season, with the success on the field likely helping the effort. Attendance of 391,653 was the highest by the Whitecaps since 2002. The team ranked fourth in the Midwest League with average attendance of 5,595.

Looking to make a whole family day out of Saturday. Consider going to the Whitecaps open house during the day and then the Grand Rapids Griffins game at night. The Griffins game is their featured annual Star Wars Night, which will have more than 50 characters in costumes that your kids can meet and take photos with. Two great local sports teams offering fun for the whole family, don’t miss it.
