Photo Gallery Friday: Our Favorite 2018 Michigan Photos

Photo Gallery Friday is a regular feature on Travel the Mitten that will help showcase photos from places where a few pictures just aren’t enough to show off everything.

As another year of exploring old and new places in Michigan comes to a close, we take a moment to look back on some of our favorite things we saw this year. This photo gallery includes a sampling of our favorite 2018 Michigan photos. Be sure to also check out our 18 New Michigan Places We Visited in 2018 post, where you can learn more about our first visits to Sanilac Petroglyphs State Historic Site, Hartwick Pines State Park, Dinosaur Gardens, and more.

Some of the highlights of our year were touring lighthouses at Fort Gratiot (Port Huron) and Old Mackinac Point, the HURON Lightship, and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. We were also able to attend Rock, Roar & Pour at the John Ball Zoo (Grand Rapids), the Michigan Brewers’ Guild U.P. Fall Beer Festival (Marquette), Grand Rapids Comic Con, and the Barry County Brewfest.

We spent a lot of time in Sault Ste. Marie for the 350th anniversary of Michigan’s oldest city, and spent time exploring Frankenmuth and Ann Arbor. In February we were able to visit Little Caeasar’s Arena in Detroit for the first time to take in a Detroit Red Wings game, and in April we headed up to the Upper Peninsula and were fortunate to get to see Coast Guard ice breakers clearing the shipping channel near Whitefish Bay.

Hiking is always a big part of our exploration of the Great Lakes state, and this year we spent time at Silver Lake State Park, on the North Country Trail near Rockford and Middleville, at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, and Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We visited many Upper Peninsula waterfalls as well, and made our first stops at Michigan breweries in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Marquette, Hart, Munising, Holland, Warren, and more. It was a great year, and we look forward to bringing you even more and even better coverage of Michigan in 2019!
