Munising Falls – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Alger County

Munising Falls

Alger County is home to more than 20 waterfalls, and one of the most spectacular and also easiest to visit is Munising Falls just east of downtown Munising. After a short, paved walk from the parking lot visitors are treated to a view of Munising Creek as it plunges down more than 50 feet inside what appears to be a half-bowl of sandstone.

Once the creek reaches the ground it forms a small pool before resuming a quiet, gentle flow on its way towards Lake Superior.

The best view comes from a platform at the end of the trail with a straight-on vantage point, but additional views can be had from higher up on either the left side (short trip with some steps) or right side (many steps but great view) of the falls. Signs are posted asking visitors to not go beyond the barriers, no matter how tempting it may be to view this falls from underneath it.

Directions: from Munising head east out of town toward the Pictured Rocks Cliffs. Take a left onto Washington St. (which becomes Sand Point Rd.) where signs mark the way to the falls and a visitor center. The parking area will be about a half mile down the road on the right. The hike to the falls is less than a quarter mile and the trail is pet-friendly.
