*Update*: Due to weather, this event has been moved indoors. The opening event and world record attempt will now take place at Fountain Street Church.

Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids has been bringing laughs to visitors through its annual Laughfest event held every year since 2011. Along with bringing some of the most well known comedians across the country, Laughfest brings with it an official Guinness World Record each year. This year will be no different as the fifth annual event will attempt to set a new world record for largest number of people wearing paper crowns. If you live in Grand Rapids or nearby, consider being a part of a world record once again.

On Thursday March 5th, Laughfest will attempt to break the previous record for most people wearing paper crowns. The event will be held at Rosa Parks Circle in Downtown Grand Rapids. The current record holder is the Sathaya Diabetic Care in Tamilnadu, India. In July of 2014, 1324 people wore paper crowns to set that record.

Back in 2014, Laughfest set a Guinness World Record for the most people wearing sunglasses in the dark with 1675 people taking part. Here is a look at the Laughfest track record with Guinness:

  • 2011: Set world record with 925 rubber chickens tossed. This broke the prior record of 265. Record was later passed the same year with 999 rubber chickens thrown.
  • 2012: Set world record with 607 people performing the chicken dance while wearing chicken beaks.
  • 2013: Set world record with 1532 people wearing fake mustaches. Record was later passed with 2268 people in a record breaking attempt.
  • 2014: Set world record with 3725 people wearing sunglasses in the dark

As you can see, some of the records set at Laughfest still stand, while others have fallen. Rosa Parks Circle, located in downtown Grand Rapids, was also the hosting location of a world record set in 2012 aside from Laughfest. In 2012, the world record for largest swing dance took place with 756 participants.

Laughfest runs March 5th through March 15th and features a large amount of shows.
