Michigan’s Wilderness State Park Could Win Best State Park For RVers Award

One of Michigan’s state parks is up for an award from 10best.com, a unit of USA Today.

Wilderness State Park is one of 20 state parks across the country vying for the honor of Best State Park for RVers. Wilderness State Park is the only Michigan state park nominated for the award.

“The 10,000 acre Wilderness State Park includes 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline as well as numerous hiking trails, a swimming beach and a dedicated dark sky preserve. Of the 250 campsites, 18 offer full hookups for RV travelers,” the 10best.com entry says.

We have camped at Wilderness State Park many times and love the close proximity to Lake Michigan. Several of the sites are located on the beach with a short walking trail to a sandy beach and Lake Michigan.

Sites book up fast especially those located on the water. There are walkways to the beach for those without spots on the water. The campground has been undergoing maintenance to redo its loops and upgrade bathrooms and camping spots.

The campground is one of our favorite spots for sunsets in Michigan and is located in close proximity to Petoskey (around 1 hour) and Mackinaw City (12 miles away).

Our kids love camping here as they can walk from the tent to the beach and play in the sand and water without hopping in a car.

McGulpin Point Lighthouse and the Headlands International Dark Sky Park are located nearby the campground.

Wilderness State Park also offers 22 miles of trails including 5.5 miles of the North Country Trail.

The campground is located at 903 Wilderness State Park Dr, Carp Lake, MI 49718.

Fans have the next two weeks to vote on the winner of the award.

At the time of writing, Wilderness State Park is currently in fourth place behind state parks from Florida, South Dakota and Georgia.
