Is Michigan’s Platte River Campground the Best Campground in America?
Just in time for the last two months of summer, a new set of Reader’s Choice polls are up at 10best.com. Current contests are focused on camping, as they look to find the Best RV Park, Best Campground, Best Glamping Spot, Best Roadside Motel, Best State Park for RVers, Best Trailer Hotel, and Best Luxury RV Resort. One Michigan campground is a finalist for the Best Campground Award, and we definitely agree with its inclusion on this list. The Platte River Campground at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has long been one of our favorites, and now with this vote it has the chance to get even more attention nationally.
In nominating Platte River Campground, 10best offers the following: “Platte River Campground is located within walking distance of both the river and the beaches of Lake Michigan, within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on the lower peninsula of Michigan. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table, with restrooms and showers available in each camp section. For more primitive campers, the White Pine “backcountry” campground is available on a nearby trail.”
As record numbers of visitors continue to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, this campground will continue to see a rise in popularity. We love the large campsites, clean restroom and shower facilities, and easy access to the Platte River for summer kayaking and tubing trips. The campground is also close to the Platte River Point beach, which is a great spot for swimming, looking for Petoskey stones, having a picnic, or relaxing and taking in the views of the dunes.
Platte River Campground has 96 sites with electric hookups, and more than 175 total sites. All sites are reservable online at recreation.gov (a welcome change for those who remember waiting in line for the first-come first-serve system), but be aware that this campground fills up months in advance for summer reservations.
At the time of this writing, Platte River Campground sat in 2nd place out of 20 finalists. Top challengers include Imagination Mountain Camp Resort (TN), Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground (FL), and Inn Town Campground (CA). You can vote once per day until the contest wraps up on Monday, July 19.
