LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan is scheduled to open to the public March 25th 2016, at the Great Lakes Crossings Mall. This highly anticipated attraction continues to stay in the news with recent happenings getting us more excited for the Grand Opening.
LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan unveiled their replica of the GM Renaissance Center for the center’s MINILAND, featuring replicas of key metro Detroit attractions. This building was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show. The replica is six feet by six feet and stands more than six feet tall. The GM Renaissance Center came in first place in a user poll for the top Detroit landmark. The other nine finalists will also be built and make up the attraction’s MINILAND.
The nine other finalists were:
- Spirit of Detroit
- Belle Isle Park
- Motown Museum
- Fox Theatre
- Guardian Building
- Comerica Park
- Uniroyal World’s Largest Tire
- Michigan Central Station
- The Heidelberg Project
Helping create MINILAND replicas and other LEGO creations for LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan will be Clint Parry, who won the Master Model Builder competition. Parry, an Ohio resident, beat out more than 100 competitors in a grueling two day competition across several timed competitions to build LEGO creations. Parry receives a full time salary position. His main tasks will be maintaining and updating MINLAND models, and developing new features and exhibitions. Parry had this to say of winning the competition, “I have loved building with LEGO bricks for as long as I can remember, and I am so excited to make this passion my career. My hope is to inspire children to build anything they can dream up.” Now if we can just convince Parry to build a replica of the Mackinac Bridge.
Also appearing at this new Michigan attraction will be the Legoland Shop. This store will be open seven days a week and will be open to all customers, not just those who have a ticket to the center. More than 900 sets and products will be offered at the store. The store will also rotate products, including special offers each month. Annual Pass Holders will get 10% off every purchase. The hours for the store will be 10am to 9pm Monday through Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.
Speaking of buying LEGOs, did you know LEGOLAND Discovery Centers feature Minifigure trading? At the attraction, kids can swap their Minifigure with employees who wear them on their name tags. You can bring Minifigures from home or buy them at the store and then swap them as many times as you want with employees during your visit.
