Cheboygan Brewing Company MI Bar

On a few of our trips to the northeastern corner of the Lower Peninsula we’ve been able to stop at Cheboygan Brewing Company in Cheboygan and try out a wide range of their well-crafted beers. You may have seen 16 oz. cans of Cheboygan Brewing Company’s beer in retail outlets across the state like Meijer and others. Some of their major releases include Lighthouse Amber, Blood Orange Honey, Blueberry Cream Ale, and IPA #11.

Cheboygan Lighthouse Amber

When we made our most recent visit in the summer of 2016, we were able to try Blood Orange Honey, La Cerveza, Jusa Porter, Lighthouse Amber and Yuzu. Here are some brief descriptions of the beers from the handout we were given when we ordered our flight as well as what we thought of them.

Cheboygan Brewing Company Flight Paddle

Blood Orange Honey  – American-style wheat beer, with fresh local wildflower honey and blood orange zest added. 5.7% ABV

La Cerveza – Mexian-Bohemian style beer that uses five different styles of barley and German hops. This was a refreshing light option that was refreshing and perfect for summer sipping. 4% ABV

Jusa Porter – Black, chocolate and caramel malts make this beer creamy with a slightly bitter finish. We really enjoyed this one as it proved to be a smooth and flavorful dark beer.

Lighthouse Amber – 2013 World Expo of Beer Gold Medal winner. This altbier has a Noble hop aroma up front and finishes with a caramel malt nose. This has been a Northern Michigan favorite of ours for some time, there’s a good reason this is one of their flagship beers! 5.25% ABV

Yuzu – “Made with yuzu fruit, lemon, orange and grapefruit flavors and cardamom, tangerine peels and basil.” This refreshing beer had a ton of flavor and was one we’d quickly try again. 5.5 % ABV

Cheboygan Brewing Company Patio Seating

During our first visit we sampled many of these same beers but were also able to try out the Oktoberfest, a 2012 gold medal winner at the World Expo of Beer. On both visits, we found the small taproom had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. When weather permits there’s also some great seating outside. As lighthouse enthusiasts, we enjoyed the fact that their tap handles and Lighthouse Amber cans feature the Cheboygan Crib Light. We definitely recommend a visit if you find yourself exploring the Sunrise Side near Mackinaw City.
