This Popular Michigan Waterfall Will Be Closed For Most of 2026

After 2025 saw a construction project limit access to Upper Tahquamenon Falls (a project that remains ongoing), a new project in 2026 will keep visitors from reaching another waterfall for most of the year. Agate Falls is a picturesque waterfall and state scenic site accessed from a roadside park off of M-28 near Trout Creek, and it will be closed until at least November of this year while work is done on the trestle bridge above the top of the falls.

Agate Falls is one of the Upper Peninsula’s most beautiful waterfalls, and it is formed as the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River drops roughly 40 feet over a terraced sandstone ledge. The trail from the parking area leads under M-28 and to a viewing platform at the top of the falls. A well-worn footpath leads down below (travel with caution) for those looking to fish or get a better view of the whole waterfall.

A sign in the roadside park tells more about the history of the area, as it transitioned from a “logging highway” to a popular fishing and tourist destination. While the bridge above the falls no longer carries railroad traffic, it does see quite a bit of use as an ORV and snowmobile trail. While the current project is ongoing that trail has been rerouted. If you’re in this area we would also recommend a stop at the nearby Bond Falls Scenic Site where a larger waterfall is located.
