Happy Birthday Michigan: A Look at 185 Michigan Places We Love
On January 26, 1837, President Andrew Jackson signed a bill that made Michigan the 26th state. The Michigan Territory had pushed for statehood for a few years but conflict over the Toledo Strip kept it from happening. The ending of the conflict saw Michigan get what is now the Upper Peninsula and Ohio get Toledo – still one of the best trades of all time!
