The Northern Michigan craft beer scene continues to grow and improve, and on a recent visit to Petoskey we had a chance to check out one of the newer breweries in the area, Beards Brewery. Located right in the heart of downtown Petoskey, Beards will soon celebrate its third anniversary. They keep 10 rotating beers on tap and aren’t afraid to experiment with styles or flavors, so chances are you can try something different each week if you want! We recently included Beards on our list of 14 Northwest Michigan Breweries You Should Check Out For Michigan Craft Beer Month (July).

Beards Brewery Beer Flight

We ordered up a flight of all seven beers on tap at the time we visited, including Kickback (Amber/Red Ale), Nordenbier (Wheat Ale) and Buffaloed (Brown Ale). Diamond in the Rough (ESB) and Grizzly Adams (Double IPA) were very good, but the two that stood out the most for us were Tree Blood Maple Sap Stout and Serendipity Porter. The Tree Blood is made with Maple sap instead of water – an not so traditional way of brewing that leads to a great tasting beer. The Serendipity Porter is incredibly smooth with chocolate flavor and a hint of cherry, this was our choice for a growler to go.

We really liked the relaxed atmosphere at Beards. When you arrive you walk down a hallway that leads to the first of two seating areas. There is a bookshelf full of board games for entertainment, and a lot of beard-themed decorations (including vinyl albums featuring bearded singers in the men’s restroom). A skylight helps things feel open and roomy, and a large window on the north side of the lounge room gives visitors a peek at the brewing process at work.

A food truck visits on weekends with tacos and more, and there are occasionally other food options. If you’re in the area shopping, relaxing at Petoskey State Park, or checking out the Ernest Hemingway walking tour around town, a stop at Beards will be a great addition to your visit. If you’re on a craft beer journey in the north, Petoskey Brewing and Mackinaw Trail Winery/Brewing Co. are also great places to visit.
